Enough about Me?
Hardly
The truth about the creation of fiction is that there is more than imagination in most of them. How abstract the bend depends on wind direction. I am taking the liberty to harvest elements for the main male character from personal experience and acquaintances. My story does not begin in the kitchen, but the backstory of the ship’s cook might, and if you have forgotten, this screenplay’s first scene starts with noodle making in the galley of our R.V. (research vessel for new arrivals)
I have personally never made a single noodle, but I have watched them get made by hand and machine. Making noodles remains a dream, as does participation in screen production. I hope to get both done in this lifetime. Speaking of my bucket list, the number one item is a trip around the world on a ship.
I come from a community that filled positions in film production. Grips, decorators, electricians…father to son transitions. The Signal Corps home was Fort Monmouth, just upriver from where I grew up. There was a steady stream of communication between the New Jersey fort known as “The Home of the Signal Corps” and Astoria, Queens NYC production facilities.
New Jersey itself has quite a technology history…Edison’s laboratory is now National Park Service property. As part of my graduate history of communications class we had a tour of the place. There was Edison’s Black Maria, the world’s first film production studio (according to wiki) and some of the first motion picture studios were on the Jersey side of the Hudson.
Now, Netflix has set up a production facility where the fort used to be. If I whale happens to find this work in progress, the arrival of Netflix might play a part in this.
I have been bored shitless. I have been angrily stuck in roles I incorrectly felt at the time were beneath me. I could not imagine myself beyond them. I had given up on even getting a BA done, and ever starting, let alone completing a graduate program.
Now? I am freefalling into eternity, happily imagining my bucket list items, after getting more done than I thought possible back then.
